Jūrmala is long and has many centres — Majori, Bulduri, Kauguri and Ķemeri are not the same place. We work across the whole city, planning the visit around the actual address.
What makes water meter work in Jūrmala distinctive is that the city stretches along the coast for several dozen kilometres. The address “Jūrmala” on its own says very little: Ķemeri and Lielupe are as far apart as central Riga is from Ādaži. That is why it helps us if your request names the particular part of the city rather than just the city.
The second distinctive feature is the variety of the building stock. Historic wooden summer houses, Soviet-era apartment blocks in Kauguri and modern private houses each call for a different approach — technically and in how the time is planned.
Historic wooden buildings. In the old summer houses the plumbing has often been built up gradually and not always to a single plan. The meter may be on an unheated veranda, in a basement or under a floor hatch. In properties like these a survey before the work is all but essential.
Seasonally used properties. Some properties in Jūrmala are only used in summer. In an unheated building over winter, water left in the system can freeze and damage both the meter and the parts next to it. If the property stands empty over the winter, it is worth mentioning — it changes what we check.
The apartment stock in Kauguri. In Kauguri and other apartment areas the situation is closer to Riga's housing estates: meters by the riser in the bathroom, relatively predictable assemblies and often a documentation procedure set by the property manager.
Sandy ground and the coastal environment. By the sea, salt air and damp take their toll on metal connections sooner. In practice that means old connections here are more often corroded, and removing them takes more care.
Owners of permanently occupied homes. In Kauguri, Sloka and other year-round parts of the city the situation resembles an ordinary town — a planned replacement or a specific problem.
Owners of summer houses and seasonal properties. Here the requests often come at the start or the end of the season, and the question is frequently broader than the meter — whether the system is ready for winter.
Managers of guest houses and hotels. Properties with several metering points, where it is better value to plan the work outside the season.
Residents of apartment blocks. Apartments in Kauguri and other apartment districts with predictable assemblies.
In Jūrmala the service is adapted to both permanently occupied and seasonally used properties. The meter is included.
At properties with no metering, including older summer houses where the system was built up gradually.
The seal, the certificate and the recorded readings once the work is finished.
You fill in the form, naming the part of the city and telling us whether the property is used all year round — in Jūrmala both matter.
We write back and confirm the address. In Jūrmala the part of the city makes a real difference to planning the visit, so we establish it straight away.
We replace the meter and look over the connections. By the sea we pay extra attention to connections, which corrode faster here.
We seal the meter and prepare the certificate. At seasonal properties we can also look at whether the system is ready for winter.
If the property is not heated over the winter, when the work is carried out matters more than usual. In early summer, when you open the property up after the winter, it is worth checking not only the meter but the connections too — coastal damp and swings in temperature wear them out faster than a dry indoor environment does. If you are planning to leave the property empty over the winter, it is worth thinking about in the autumn rather than after something has frozen.
In Jūrmala the biggest difference comes from whether the property is used all year round. In a permanently occupied house, replacing a meter is an ordinary job. In a seasonal property it is often only half the question — the other half is whether the system has come through the winter at all.
The practical signs that something is wrong show up in the spring: traces of damp around the connections, cracks in the meter housing, or the meter failing to turn normally once the water is back on. If you notice any of these, the system should not be turned fully on before it has been looked at.
In the historic wooden houses there is one further factor. There the plumbing has often been built up gradually over decades, and two connections in the same house can date from completely different periods. In properties like these a survey before the work is not excessive but necessary.
In Jūrmala we also work with hotels, guest houses and the managers of apartment blocks. At properties with a seasonal pattern of use it is often better value to plan the work outside the busy season. How we plan work at properties with several metering points is described in the section for property managers.
Near Jūrmala we also work in these places. Distances are as the crow flies.
